Day Trips

SUGGESTION: If you want to have a look around the farm PLUS visit the zoo or mountains, we suggest that you stay at least three nights which gives you 2 days of activities. One day around the farm and visiting 2828 in Gulargambone and one day doing something else. So often,  people come for a couple of nights and just can't fit everything in. We need a couple of days notice if you want to do a yabbying trip with the boys or a farm tour with Rodney or Sandra.

YABBYING TRIP

October to April only.

Doug and Nick will be happy to take you on a 2 hour yabbying trip to one of our favourite dams. The tour is $20 and includes refreshments. The boys guarantee yabbies or your money back. Minimum 2 people.

Satellite spotting

Take the opportunity to watch satellites passing overhead with the naked eye. To check what will be passing over Wilber, when and where check out this link. Great fun for kids out on the lawn at night!!

Gilgandra Attractions - 30 mins travel each way

Do the rounds in the town of windmills visiting the  Coo-ee Heritage Centre and Gallery, Rural Museum,  Cactus Nursery and  Gilgandra Observatory.

Warrumbungle National Park - 35 mins travel  - loop 2-4 hours

Plan your day with a drive to the National Park, call at the information centre and stroll in to Whitegum lookout. The more adventurous may enjoy a hike on one of the many signed tracks throughout the park, or take the stumps for a cricket challenge by the creek. Wildlife is abundant, especially kangaroos and you might even be lucky enough to spot a koala. Do a loop via Siding Springs Observatory, Coonabarabran and back through Tooraweenah where you can stop off for a refreshment at the Mountain View Hotel.

Macquarie Marshes & Honeysuckle Cottage- 1.2 hours travel each way

Driving west toward Quambone you will notice the country change considerably and are likely to spot mobs of emus and the odd kangaroo. The Macquarie Marshes are an extensive wetland system covering an area of 220,000 hectares, representing one of the largest semi-permanent wetlands in south-eastern Australia. The Macquarie Marshes are a well known habitat of many waterbirds. Over 60 species have been sighted here.  Ibis, Egrets, Cormorants, Spoonbills and Herons are but a few of the breeding species found at the Macquarie Marshes. Guided tours are available ranging from 1 hour-5 hours duration. Pamphlets and contact numbers are at the Wilber farmhouse.

Keen quilters should take the opportunity to call at Honeysuckle Cottage on the way back through Quambone. It is quiltmakers heaven!!! Ring Carey on 6824 2083.

No trip to Quambone would be complete without "washing the dust down" at the Sundowner.

Western Plains Zoo - 1.2 hours travel   THIS IS A WHOLE DAY ACTIVITY

Widely recognised as Australia's greatest open range zoo. Drive in the comfort of your own car, or by electric cart or bike, both of which can be hired at the zoo. An extensive program of daily keeper talks and activity feeds, hosted by zoo keepers, offer an excellent educational experience and an insight into the animals’ natural behaviours.

A behind-the-scenes ‘Early Morning Walk’ is a fantastic way to get close to some of the Zoo’s most exotic animals. These weekend tours are conducted by trained Zoo Friend volunteers. During the school holidays the tours are also conducted on Wednesdays and Fridays. No bookings required, just show up at the Zoo gate by
6.45am .

Picnic grounds and free BBQ facilities are available around the Zoo. You can also enjoy cafe style fare with a fabulous view at Bakhita's Cafe or visit one of the kiosks or the Zoo Shop.
Western Plains Zoo is the perfect place to visit for a great day out. The Zoo is open from
9am to 5pm every day of the year.

Lightning Ridge Opal Fields - 2 hours travel each way

Famous for the Black Opal, visitors far outweigh locals at "The Ridge". Spend a day visiting art galleries, opal tours, lunch and be sure to enjoy a mineral spa bath before the drive home.
